ASSISTANT MECHANIC

8 hours per day, year-round, Pay Range $24.20-$32.06/hour DOE
Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

General Responsibilities:

  • Diagnose, repair and maintain school buses and other district and co-op vehicles

  • Communicate effectively with staff and the general public

  • Make minor road-side repair

  • Repair and replace seats, glass, sheet metal, latches, and other body components and assemblies.

  • Change oil and filters, flush and maintain cooling systems, install and repair snow chains, adjust brakes, and lubricate chassis, wheel bearings and other assemblies. Perform all required preventive maintenance and regular bus safety inspections.

  • Operate battery chargers, compression gauges, torque wrenches, welding equipment, grinders, reamers, timing lights, hoists, jacks, porta-power, pumps, compressors, drills, presses, air wrenches, and all other equipment required for performing repair and maintenance of motor vehicles.

  • Assist in diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, and engine defects in busses and other automotive equipment.

  • Assist with overhauling and rebuilding of hydraulic and air brake systems and other major components by repair of replacement of parts.

  • Assist in the repair of alternators, starters, and all other electrical components, utilizing testing devices and machine equipment as required.

  • Assist in performing general tune-ups and repairs, utilizing diagnostic equipment

  • Perform other related duties and tasks as assigned by their supervisor

  • Able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.

  • Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community, able to perform these duties with awareness of all school district requirements and policies.

  • Assist in cleaning and organization of the shop, parts room and other maintenance areas.

  • Assist with other departments as needed.

  • Other duties as assigned

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A minimum of two years’ experience as a heavy duty truck or bus mechanic

  • Vocational training may be substituted for work experience for up to two years of work experience.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Graduate

  • Must possess a Class B CDL with P and S endorsements, airbrake restriction removed or be able to secure said license within two months of being hired

  • Hold a current and valid first-aid/CPR card or able to secure in 60 days

  • Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds and stand for long periods of time

  • Must have normal vision and hearing with correction to be able to observe and hear all mechanical defects

  • Must demonstrate ability to use all shop equipment and tools including computerized engine diagnostic software

  • Must be able to operate office machines and personal computer

  • Must be able to read and understand technical manuals and instructions and perform technical research via websites

  • Must be able to understand and carry out written and oral directions with minimal supervision

  • Must be a team player who is willing to maintain cooperative relations with shop and district personnel

  • Must make effective use of discretion and independent judgment on a daily basis

  • Must be able to recognize when other shop personnel need assistance and offer assistance without being directed

  • Must submit to and pass a pre-employment drug screen

  • This position may occasionally require unscheduled overtime
