General Position Summary:

Custodial staff will keep the district’s school buildings in such a state of operating excellence that they present no problems or interruptions to the educational program. Primary responsibility is to ensure students and staff have a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean and efficient place in which to learn, play, work and develop. It is important for a custodian to be careful and thorough in working, cleaning and tidying the premises. A keen eye for detail and diligence are also imperative in custodial maintenance.

Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities:

  •  Cleans classrooms thoroughly on a regular basis
  • Operates cleaning and polishing equipment
  • Performs minor repair and maintenance functions
  •  Performs minor repair and maintenance functions
  • Performs general and routine custodial duties
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned by the building administrator
  • Assist in moving equipment and related work
  • Requests and maintains necessary inventory of supplies
  • Maintains custodial storage areas and equipment
  • Secures building at the end of the work shift
  • Displays a positive attitude toward the district’s energy conservation/recycling program
  • Be aware of dangerous indicators and report to the building administrator; i.e. drug use, graffiti, unusual behavior, and weapons.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Scope:

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as manuals, operating procedures and District policies.
  • Apply common sense understanding and carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems and chaotic situations requiring creative planning to complete required work.
  • Demonstrate the ability to show initiative in projects and tasks assigned without specific direction
  • Ability to work independently
  • Demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Flexible working hours

Specific Job Skills

  • Must have good communication and public relation skills
  • Effective use of discretion and independent judgment on a daily basis

  • Good interpersonal, communication, leadership skills are essential.

Job Conditions

  • Required to sit, stand or talk for extended periods of time
  • Movement from one location to another frequently occurs
  • The position may require some overtime and evening meetings and be on-call at all times
  • Exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays
  • Occasionally required to stand and reach with hands and arms
  • Hand strength is required to grasp tools and climb ladders
  • Close vision and depth perception is required
  • Frequently 50 pounds will be lifted or moved
  • Occasionally the employee will move up to 90 pounds with assistance
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate
