Dear students and families of Wallace and Priscilla Stevenson Intermediate School,

It is truly my pleasure to introduce myself as your principal! I am honored and excited to have this role in our community and would like to tell you a little about me.

I am a graduate of the University of Washington (Go Dawgs!) where I studied in the School of Music Education and was a 4-year member of the Husky Marching Band. After college, I joined the U.S. Peace Corps where I was sent to teach in a very rural part of Madagascar. That was my first teaching job, and so far the one I have the most interesting stories to tell about.

After my Peace Corps service ended, I worked for a hang gliding company in North Carolina and spent a winter skiing in Colorado before getting serious about my career and taking a job as band and music director in La Conner School District. La Conner is a small community and I was able to work with students in grades 3-12 and discovered the joy in working with elementary and middle school children. In that position I showed an aptitude for the administrative side of education and completed a Masters in Instructional Leadership from Pacific Lutheran University. That degree and credential led to an administrative position as the Assistant Principal at Sultan Elementary where I split the leadership of a school with about 600 students.

After dealing with the increasing gridlock and other issues that came from a rapidly growing city, my wife and I decided to look for someplace with a real sense of community where we could raise our children. We couldn’t be happier to have landed here and our son Elliott seems to love it as well as a baby can.

If I could sum up my philosophy of education and leadership in one sentence, it would be a quote from Dr. James Comey: “No significant learning can occur without a significant relationship”. I am truly looking forward to working closely with each of you to ensure the best possible educational outcomes for all students of WPSIS.
